Thank you for your letter which I received today. I am most concerned that you consider the Agency has acted in a provocative manner. That certainly was not our intention. It is our normal practice to provide the Dept of Health Press Office with a line on any press releases relating to medicines, such as that from Social Audit of 3 December. Our statement reflects our current position on the matter as we have indicated in recent correspondence.

We of course carefully examine all emerging evidence and information relevant to the safety of medicines and are reviewing your article "The Antidepressant Web" in the International Journal of Risk and Safety in Medicine. We shall also be consulting widely with relevant bodies on this matter to gain their perspective on the view you have presented. Please let me know if there are any particular bodies that you feel should be involved.
