Dear Mr Medawar,

Your letter of 7 March to Mr Alder has been referred to me for reply. He has also referred your further letter of 10 March and I am dealing with the two letters together.

In para. 5 of your letter of 7 March you asked for

"copies of any definitions or guidance relating to the meaning and interpretations of [commercial confidentiality ... such as intellectual property, sensitive information about production methods or techniques] that the MCA relies on, including all such references in current SOPs"

I am afraid this information at present is not readily retrievable from a central system which can be easily scanned. I am currently scoping the work involved in a manual records search.

We may therefore ask you to pay a charge for this information. I will let you have further details as soon as possible.

You may in the meantime wish to refer to pages 68/69 of the Guidance sent with Dr Wood's letter of 23 January which gives general information about definitions of commercial confidences and intellectual property within the terms of the Code of Practice on Access to Government Information.
