Dear Dr Medawar
Case AUTH/949/10/99: Advertisement for Detrisitol
Thank you for your letter of 21 January 2000 regarding the above. The report for the case will appear in the February edition of the Code of Practice Review. The Review is widely circulated to all pharmaceutical companies, pharmaceutical and medical press, the Medicines Control Agency and the Department of Trade and Industry as well as to other interested parties. We will send a copy to you and if you would like to receive it on a regular basis please let me know and we will add your details to the mailing list.
The case report will identify Social Audit as making the complaint. This should have been made clear at the time the complaint was received. The Constitution and Procedure states that organisations are named in case reports (Paragraph 12.2, page 35, of the Code of Practice Booklet). The fact that Social Audit was not named is due to an error on our part. I am sorry for any inconvenience caused. I have written to Pharmacia & Upjohn about the matter.
The Panel's ruling should be seen as promoting the standards set out in Clause 7.2 of the Code and will provide further guidance to companies on how to ensure that material meets the requirements of that clause.
Yours sincerely
