10 June 2004 Dear Mr Medawar, Thank you for your letters of May 4th and June 8th . I apologise for the delay in replying. In response to the first and second points in your letter of May 4th, the MHRA does not accept that the statement made on the website was defamatory. The text was a statement of the Agency’s opinion that the criticisms made in your article are not accurate, for the reasons set out in the answer. The Agency’s opinion was based on its knowledge of existing procedures and it was entitled to express the view as it did. On your third point, I can confirm that the MHRA did not communicate with the International Journal of Risk & Safety in Medicine. The Agency is preparing a detailed response to the points made in your article. This is taking longer than we anticipated.
